WET, Wet, wet. It sure has been wet this fall, and the weather pattern continued for our final scheduled foray of 2018. It sprinkled during most of the foray, then we had a few minutes of sunshine in the afternoon. We had a reasonably good crowd considering the conditions, and all were enthusiastic about getting into the woods. We found a modest number of fungal species and the woods was not loaded. One theory is that it has been so wet that everything has fruited several times already this fall, and all of the fungus is out of energy. Here we are ready to go into the woods:

Some of us went across the road to the property on the west side. Unfortunately, there was little ground to hunt as it was way too steep. Marty did spot one of his favorite edibles, Velvet Foot.

A log was found to be covered with Hericium coralloides, a choice edible. Here is a photo of the log after much had already been harvested:

Before the foray had even started, Marty had gone into the woods and found a tree with 5 Hen-of-the-Woods growing around the base. This one weight about 20 pounds as it was really wet and waterlogged.

After cleaning, boiling for 10 minutes, soaking overnight in a marinade of apple cider, soy sauce, garlic and spices, then dehydrated for 5 hours, we end up with 12 ounces of jerky. Delicious.
