Sept 1, Maquoketa Caves State Park, Jackson County.
Wow! Boy did we find a lot of mushrooms on the Maquoketa foray. Mass quantities of Amanitas, Cortinarius, and Wax Caps. We found a log covered in False Turkey Tails and Phlebia incarnata. We found many mushrooms that we could not identify because we have never seen them before.

There was a steady rain at the park for several hours prior to the start of the foray. During the foray, it sprinkled a few times, so the rain gear was not really needed. Here is what the woods looked like just before the start of the foray:

We found the most striking crimson colored Wax Cap that any of us had ever seen. Really cool.

There were other wax caps in the woods that were transitioning from red to yellow. Here is a whole family of them:

By noon, we had collected a huge number of mushrooms. We put them on a table for all to admire. We had many hikers stop and look at what we had found...they were all impressed.

Saturday, Sept. 22, 10:00 am - noon, Big Grove Preserve, Johnson Co.
Directions: From Iowa City, take Highway 1 north to Newport Road NE. Go west on Newport Road for 1.2 miles, then right on Sugar Bottom Road. Continue on Sugar Bottom Road for 2 miles, then take a left on 245th St. NE. Continue on 245th St., which will turn to into a gravel road. After 1 mile, take a slight left onto Starry Night Lane NE. This will look like a private road, but permission to use it has been secured by Bur Oak Land Trust. At the end of Starry Night Lane, there is a small parking lot and a Bur Oak Land Trust sign. Please do not park in front of the private gated entrance

We last visited Big Grove two years ago the first Saturday in September. There was so much to find that we didn't get far. Hopefully there will be even more to find this year.

Saturday, Oct. 6th, 10:00 am - noon, Eden Valley Refuge, Clinton County.
Directions: Eden Vally Refuge is located 2.2 miles south of Baldwin Iowa on 50th Ave. Park at the Nature Center.

This will be the site of our annual meeting, conducted after the foray. Club members should make every effort to attend the foray/meeting. Bring a dish to share, pot luck style. Note that the dish need not contain mushrooms. We may or may not have a short program after lunch and before the meeting.
