July 22nd, Squire's Point, Johnson Co. Iowa.
The woods at Squire's Point were wet from the previous day's rain, but the temperature was mild and there were few bugs. We had a several members of Iowa Master Naturalists group with us, and it was fun interacting with them.

We found a wide variety of fungi, but only a few boletes. I expected more bolete species and more edible mushrooms. We did find some Chanterelles, like this one:

The woods was full of rubber cups. We must have found sever hundred of them. They are not uncommon, but this was ridiculous.

One drawback at Squire's Point is the lack of a table to sit at after the foray to identify our fungal finds. Here is part of our collection on the asphalt in the parking lot:

After the foray, some of us went to Ellis Park in Cedar Rapids. We were greeting with hundreds of giant mushrooms. They were everywhere. Here is one:

Saturday, August 26th, 10am - noon, Brown's Woods, Polk Co. Iowa.

Directions:
Brown's Woods is in the West Des Moines, just south and west of Des Moines. From I235, exit at 63rd St (Hwy 28) and go 3.5 miles south. Turn right onto Veterans Parkway and go southwest 0.2 miles. Turn right on to Brown's Woods Drive and go north 0.2 miles. Turn right again to enter the parking lot at the extreme southeast corner of Brown's Woods.

The mushroom club has not been to Brown's Woods for several years. It was always a productive location in the past, but we were always there late in the fall. It will be interesting to see if it there are good things to find in August in this mature woods.
